Here are some words a mom recently wrote concerning the "why" behind Music Lessons and the many reasons which are part of the study of music...Special Needs students are always Welcome.   This includes Autism /  Aspergers / AD / ADHD.

I remember 30 years ago a wonderful music teacher from the South making this exact statement, complete with her Southern drawl..."Every Child Deserves a Music Education".   This occurred at a meeting with 30 local Piano Teachers in San Juan Capistrano, CA, hosted by a local piano store.   The guest lecturer was from Texas, where the Music programs are well funded and Piano Lessons are even taught in the public schools, during school time.

I grabbed that sound bite and have quoted it thousands of times.   That statement has become part of my life's calling.   Special Needs children are very much included in this demand.   There is a well spring of evidence ongoing which validates that Music, Artwork and Dance are awesome tools which allow all children to communicate their feelings and emotions.

I read a contribution of a parent online expressing why she pays for private piano lessons.   I found her frankness and creative response very enlightening and informative.

"FROM A PARENT:

One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money for music lessons, and for so many years?" Well I have a confession to make, I don't pay for my kids' lessons per se. Personally, I couldn't care for it. So, what am I paying for and why?

- I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don't.

- I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are "too tired" to go practice and to lessons but practice daily and go to lessons regularly anyway.

- I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined.

- I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body.

- I pay for my kids to learn to work with others

- I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment as well as success.

- I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals.

- I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to achieve their goals and that success is not a one-time event, but rather a lifetime of personal development.

- I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships and to be inspired and to inspire others.

- I pay so that my kids can be creating something beautiful and positively transformative through a personal relationship with music making rather than in front of a screen...

...I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for music lessons, I'm paying for the opportunities that music provides my kids to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!"

Perhaps you're a parent or grandparent.   Maybe you had music lessons at home or school, or both.  I would invite your feedback on your life experience and how the study of Music benefited.   I feel very strongly and the literature supports the fact that the study of Music greatly assists children in the cognitive abilities and children excel in Math and Science.    Children also improve over time with improved attention spans, better social skills, respectful behavior both at home and in the classroom.   I include with this, parents are the key component in praising their children, expressing how proud they are of their Musical accomplishments.  After 40 years of teaching private piano I have become very aware that children need boundaries and expectations, and it is the parents job to reinforce all that is taught, in every subject area.  This is why God created parents.
